Welcome to the next generation of cataract surgery.
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only intraocular lens that can be adjusted post-implantation to fine-tune your vision. At Fairview Eye Centers, we’re proud to offer this cutting-edge option to help you achieve the best possible results after cataract surgery.
What Is the Light Adjustable Lens?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an FDA-approved intraocular lens (IOL) that can be customized after your cataract surgery:
Postoperative Adjustability: The LAL uses a photosensitive material that responds to specific UV light treatments, allowing us to refine your vision over a series of brief, non-invasive sessions.
Adjustable Technology: Unlike traditional (fixed) lenses, the LAL allows your doctor to modify and “lock in” the lens power to your unique prescription after surgery, giving you greater flexibility and precision.
Proven Results: In an FDA study, patients with the LAL were twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses compared to those with a standard monofocal IOL.

Is Surgery with the LAL Different from a Fixed Lens?
The cataract removal and lens implantation for the LAL is the same procedure you would experience with any other intraocular lens. The true difference lies in the postoperative customization.
- Cataract Removal: We safely remove your cataract and replace it with the Light Adjustable Lens.
- UV Protective Glasses: After surgery, you’ll wear special UV-blocking glasses to protect the LAL from ambient UV light until your final adjustment is complete.
- Adjustments & Lock-In: You’ll return for several light treatments—each lasting about 90 seconds—where controlled UV light is applied to your lens, gently adjusting its prescription.

- Locking in Your Results: About 24 hours after your final light treatment, your prescription is set. At that point, you can stop wearing the UV glasses and begin enjoying your customized vision.
What to Expect After Surgery
- Healing Period (4-6 Weeks): Your eye will naturally heal around the new lens. During this time, keep wearing your UV protective glasses as instructed.
- Light Treatments: You can expect between three and five total light treatments, each separated by about one week. This schedule ensures we can fine-tune your vision based on your preferences and lifestyle needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Who is a candidate for the LAL?
A: Many cataract patients are eligible, especially those looking for more precise postoperative vision. However, a thorough eye exam is required to determine if the LAL is right for you.
Q: Will I still need glasses?
A: While many LAL patients achieve excellent vision without glasses, individual results vary. You and your doctor will work together to set the best target prescription.
Q: Is the Light Adjustable Lens safe?
A: Yes. The LAL has undergone extensive clinical trials and is FDA-approved for cataract patients. The procedure has a similar safety profile to standard cataract surgery.
Q: How many visits are required?
A: Typically, you’ll have the initial cataract removal with one day and one week post-operative visits, plus 3–5 short light treatment visits. The exact number depends on how many adjustments are needed to reach your desired vision.
